Fantastic four shouldn’t be realistic, or gritty, or grounded. They should literally be the exact opposite. Dealing with dark issues but in an optimistic way.
They aren’t the only ones getting this treatment in films euther :/
Thing is. The BEST Fantastic Four film has already been made, it was called;
Fuck “gritty realism”, The Incredibles did more to capture the sense of wonder, family, EVERYTHING that is the Fantastic Four.
While I love Nolan as a filmmaker, the Nolanverse has done nothing to help the future of superhero movies, and I’m so glad that Kevin Feige gets that we need humor and wonder in our superheroes.
I’ve always said that the Captain America movies were better Superman movies then the most recent ones, for one specific reason: They GET that one man is a symbol of hope, of goodness. It doesn’t mean he can’t have flaws, or trauma, it just means that he accepts others look to him, that he does his best to uphold that. That there is always another way.
I never got that feeling from EITHER Returns or MOS. All I got from MOS once the lensglare wore off was “THIS IS REALISM YO” without much character or heart. We need hero’s not because their realistic, but because they are NOT. They’re meant to be a reflection of our society and culture, and I find it telling that the Marvel Movies, which as you point out, reject Gritty Realism for a sense of Wonder and Humor, have done so much better, and i think its BECAUSE we as a society are tired of the apathy and “realism” that is fed to us. We WANT to believe that one man can change the direction of a war, that a flawed narcissist can still be a hero to others, that a spy who has killed people can still accomplish good things.
We want all those things, and I fear that we aren’t really getting it from DC, sadly, despite its great stable of characters.
^^all of this
This all definitely explains my feelings about the awful trend of ‘dark gritty realism’ that seems to be happening lately. I don’t want to watch a SUPER-HERO movie to see realism, I want to see a SUPER-HERO movie to see SUPER-HEROES doing amazing crazy things that can’t happen in the real world. It’s part of why I hated Bane from Dark Knight Rises, I don’t want just some random guy with breathing problems, I want the impossibly huge, venom pouring into his veins, oddly suave mastermind who broke Batman not just cause he happened to be better right then, but because he understood Batman, just how to wear him down, how to beat him by running him ragged and then snapping him in half. That’s pretty dark in and of itself, it’s certainly not stuck in dull ‘realism’, it uses realism to make the story better, but it’s still a wild and over the top super-hero story. I want them to throw the MOS movie out and say ‘sorry, we f-ed up’, and bring back a true Superman, a man who is like Captain America, a shining light, being something we should strive for, to be a better person, that’s what both Captain America and Superman are examples of, honesty, kindness to others, true and justice, things we can all strive towards, it’s not just their super-powers that make them super-heroes.
Bring back the feelings of hope and happy endings DC, and Marvel, make sure you don’t fail to keep this in mind as well!
